TripAdvisor has let me down more times than not. And have had a lot of mediocre meals based on cabbie recommendations.

Eater is pretty good or local newspaper or foodie blogs. Chowhoubd used to be good. I recently discovered theinfatuation and found some great places through that.

I really wish there was an app that would do location based restaurants based upon reviews from food blogs and papers (like a curated TripAdvisor). I often travel for work and want someplace close to the hotel and it’s often a real pain to find someplace good.

We always research online. But some of our very best meals overseas have come from cab drivers. We ask them to take us where the locals like to eat.

Also don't forget to ask the concierge or other employees where you are staying. You have to be clever and discerning (to ensure you're not routed to the typical tourist spots) but obviously the locals know what's poppin!

i open google maps and search for restaurants and look for the ones with the rating closest to 5 stars. Found some gems

I like to search Tripadvisor first. I always look for the bad reviews and make sure no one got food poisoning before I read more in detail. I often lean more towards restaurants that don’t have tons and tons of reviews, but close to 100% fives star reviews

I always Google “cheap eats” and find fabulous, off the beaten path, places where locals eat.

I also like Eater and use trip advisor and yelp as resources to cross reference what I find. Local bloggers, and local magazines and online local newspapers.

Don’t use yelp or trip advisor and use your eyes. There are so many places not on English websites. That’s the fun part about traveling. Taking a gamble on a place where tourists usually don’t go.

I research online - I check trip advisors, blogs, facebook - ask friends IRL. Usually the same spots show up often enough.

When I am at the location sometimes we ask locals for recs. Cabbies often have good recs.

My hubby doesn't like overrated touristy places and we are always up for a dive.

I look up local news sites/magazines and read their top restaurant lists.

I always find Eater recommendations to be pretty good.
