I didn’t clarify very well but I was originally going to go back after 7 years when my youngest started kindergarten but I went back after 8 years instead because of Covid.

I did this twice. Stayed home with kids thru ES (took a part-time private preschool teaching job), went back full-time for a couple years, then stayed home again through a family member health crisis and went back a few years ago. I do teach a student population that is consistently in need of teachers, so I was never worried about getting a job.

I was hired at the first job I interviewed for after five years. I found that education has dramatically changed around behavioral standards, enforcement, and technology use. It’s much harder and more demoralizing.

I imagine those transitions are pretty common.

I did this, after a stint in a different career field and a longer stint as a SAHM. I started teaching in my early 20s and didn't return to the classroom until I was late 30s, and then worked as a para for several years before teaching again.

It works for me/ my family for three reasons: older kids, a mostly wfh spouse, and enough spousal income to outsource a ton of things. Everyone is different but I wouldn't have gone back if at least two out of the three things I mentioned weren't in place. Some days are really hard and I put in way more than 40 hours most weeks.

I generally like my job but I'm not sure I'll stay in the field until retirement unless there's a big overhaul in educational policies. There was a big shift after NCLB and those of us who were in classrooms before and after have seen it firsthand.

I did this. I took 3 years off after the birth of one of my children and then returned to the same school. I regret that decision.

I had romanticized the job during my absence. I forgot the challenging parts and remembered the good. When I returned, I was reintroduced to the level of exhaustion teachers experience. I had forgotten what it’s like to be “on” all day. I found I didn’t have the energy to be “on” when I got home to my children.

I’m still teaching, but that’s because I’m so far in now that it doesn’t make sense financially to quit. I wish I found something better back then, something that would have allowed me to be more present at home as my own children grew up.

My thoughts are find something else so you can give energy to your own kids when you get home. Not sure how long you have been away from education but in the last six years it has significantly changed and not for the better.

Several friends did this. It worked well for them.
