If OP doesn't drink, she isn't going to know what wine to get.

Yellow tail is not great, but it's not that bad. If your friends and family are true wine lovers, they'll bring a bottle. Open that first.

It's not so much being a snob, but cheap wine is bad. Doesn't taste good and leads to headaches. They seem to have excess sugar to coverup the lack of developed taste. I'd rather just drink water than bad wine.

I would judge myself for serving cheap wine. Aim for something middle of the road instead of bottom shelf.

Do they drink wine?

If they dont drink wine, then yes, serve away. They wont know the difference.

If they do drink wine, then no, or do as pp said as a 2 or 3rd bottle. I often buy a cheaper bottle for that since once people get tipsy your tastebuds arent quite as awake to tell the difference.

Serve it as the second or third bottle. People will care less, if at all, by then.
