I've always thought men had it easier because they can just get up, shower, dress and head out the door. I'm the kind of women who, like you mentioned, requires a blow out, a good amount of make-up to look natural, and well-tailored clothes - and that's just the daily stuff.

Interesting that “it’s easy for a woman to make herself look good” translates to “women have a hard time in the dating market” since you also say “it’s hard for a man to make himself look good” but you don’t say “so men have an easy time in the dating market”. Because that’s obviously not true. Why do you think the first pair of statements are true?

And the PP who thinks that a man can be attractive if he goes to the gym all the time and gets lots of plastic surgery - would you say it’s equally simple for a less attractive woman to get liposuction, go the the gym all the time, get implants, get plastic surgery? I think OP’s point is that many women can be attractive without doing those things.

Yep. It is a great world for those of us men who are attractive. Especially in a city like DC.

I (a man) have pictures of myself both in shape and out of shape...they look like two different people.

(shrug) Women don't even have to be thin and well-groomed to have guys panting after her. If she's fat and slovenly, she'll still get attention. Won't be from the guys she wants giving her attention, but oh well.

Men can also style their hair, get fit, and choose their clothes.

Men get nose jobs, chin/calf/hair implants if that’s their thing.

Demeanor, attitude and wit count for a lot—in fact I think men can make up for most of the physical “shortcomings” you mention with those things in a way that women can’t.

Everyone has their own standard of beauty. I would consider my wife fat but she is very beautiful and attractive and honestly if we were to ever divorce I don’t think she will have trouble finding a guy who equally finds her beautiful.

To be above average attractiveness, all a woman has to do is not be fat and be well-groomed.
For men, conventional attractiveness has a lot more to do with things that he cannot control, that are genetic: height, masculine features like a strong jawline, cheekbones, and position of the eyes, overall robustness of physique.

Take for example a couple that is considered universally unattractive: Caroline Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried. Caroline Ellison could straighten her hair, tweeze her eyebrows, get a new pair of glasses, straighten her teeth and be decent looking. There's not much SBF could do to be good looking. And can get much worse for other men. If you just happen to lack the stature or bone structure traditionally associated with masculinity, you're out of luck, and that's what drives a lot of inceldom.

The problem with this in the dating market is a lot of women can hit the gym and get their hair done and easily be a 6-7, and they understandably go for men who are 7 and above. But they are competing with 9s and 10s, plus younger women, all for the same men that are gifted genetically. In fact, I would say that slender, above average looking women have a harder time than overweight and below average women who know their market and don't date for conventional looks. The stereotype of the blue-haired, tattooed, obese woman being single because she wants a tall, dark, and handsome millionaire is not accurate. Blue haired obese women date blue-haired obese men and they are usually pretty happy with that. It's the moderately-attractive-but-not-special women over 30 who are disappointed.
