I think it's great that one of the elements that really differentiates self published authors from published authors has vanished.

With “fanart,” yes. It’s much more obvious. I get so annoyed when people label AI as fanart on TikTok and Instagram. Just be accurate and say it’s AI.

But there are AI book covers I wouldn’t be able to tell at all, like the one in the article I linked. Now if a publisher is just slapping on those AI generated fake “fanart” styles to a print book, that would be more obvious.

Can I tell by looking at it? No. I’ve found out through articles like this: https://amp.theguardian.com/books/2023/may/19/bloomsbury-admits-using-ai-generated-artwork-for-sarah-j-maas-novel.

Do I think it matters and publishers should be hiring artists to create original art? Absolutely.
