That was enough of a discount to bring it to a local Honda dealer who said they would do a thorough inspection. We put it on the lift and gave it a thorough look. Seller paid to fix two things from the accident still possibly damaged and we had a deal. Daily driver 40k miles later.

At this age I think your discount might only be $2k. Not exceptional for a lot of pre purchase investigation. But if buying as an extra van/nanny car and you’ve got a great mechanic who will put it on the lift to see what else was damaged besides body work…

Another thing to consider is that while it might be looking OK now - was the body work shoddy? Did they use Honda OEM airbags in the rebuild. Do they have rebuild photos so you can see the extent of the damage.

But yeah - if you need that discount this could be your ticket!

It does have insurance already. The “rebuilt title insurance” is why it is that way.

Yes it’s only $7500 (according to my research that’s appropriate for what otherwise should be a $10k vehicle… I could negotiate down more).

Salvage titles can be great deals or potential nightmares. It all depends on what caused it to be a total loss to begin with.

My shop totaled out a BMW 7 series for an owner because of water damage on the main wiring harness. A new harness was more than the price of the car. So it was totaled. We bought it off her and kept it out back until we found a harness from a wreck. Took two years. We put the harness in, sold it on a salvage title, made $10k for about 5 hours work and 2 years of storage.

It all depends. I’d insist on knowing the history of the vehicle and why it’s a salvage title. My wife and I and our daughter all drive salvage title cars every day. But you need to know the history of it.

Sounds like some sort of salvage title. I would stay away unless I was looking for a potential project that might be a total loss.

Kind of desperate for a new car. I see a 2014 rebuilt title Odyssey with 75,000 miles for $7500 from a private seller in my area. Anyone have any advice on purchasing? What I should look or ask for?
