Remember that a lot of seniors and juniors leave at lunch time for Montgomery college, work study or if they have half day schedules (a lot of seniors have most credits done so just come in the morning).

At a meeting, our principal said we were a closed school but it's ok if the kids leave as long as they come back. The rules are very relaxed. Kids come late to school, leave early, and the admin doesn't care. This is why the schools are partly out of control (parenting too). My kid has told me their friends leave.

Yes, because teens always do what they're told to do with no enforcement or supervision to ensure they comply. You can't be serious with this. You must not know any teens if you think this is how they operate.

These teens are told:
- Don't fight
- Don't bring weapons to school
- Don't skip class
- Don't do drugs

And THEY DO IT ANYWAY. That's because their brains are wired for high-risk activities and they're subject to peer pressure and rebellion. It's up to adults and the school system to ensure teens comply with what they're told to do. And parents are not in the school building with the kids during the day, admin, staff and teachers are. Which is precisely why schools are granted "in loco parentis" status. They are expected to take the place of the parents.

This is the same as the “teach your boys not to rape” bs that makes my blood boil. Only stupid people think this way.

MCPS can’t even enforce the no stabbing rule. You want them to enforce lunch rules?

Northwood HS - same situation. They claim it is a closed campus but zero enforcement

And how are we to enforce this if we’re not at school? And worse, if we are being undermined by the school?

The high school principals are asking parent volunteers to come in and help with supervising and monitoring lunch.

I think that's wildly inappropriate and opens MCPS up to crazy liability, but the PP is right. MCPS really does expect parent volunteers to help fill the gap in their staffing shortages.

MCPS will hide a students gender transition from parents and you expect them to inform parents about them eating lunch at McDonalds? Lol.

I forgot about Blair. I think the Chipotle banned teens from eating there during lunch hours, no?

Yes, MCPS claims their campuses are closed but they have no meaningful way of enforcing it.

Which school does your DD go to? Kennedy, Wheaton or Quince Orchard? I know those three schools in particular are famous for the local McDonald's being the spot that kids go to during lunch even though they're not supposed to. The McDonald's on Randolph Rd. between Wheaton and Kennedy has become such a hot spot for bad behavior that police installed those portable cameras with the lights to enhance surveillance. It's sad.

DD is a freshman and said several of her friends went to McDonald’s for lunch. They left school (and claimed a security guard even held the door open for them!) got on the public bus and went to lunch. Meanwhile, the principal routinely talks about how the HS is a closed campus at lunch and any student that arrives back from lunch period late gets their ID scanned and a call hone! Don’t tell me the campus is “closed” if you’re not enforcing it!
