My friend, whose father is a billionaire, had a special VIP tour at Duke where members of the basketball team showed him and his mother around campus. He was not a recruited athlete but his parents are insanely rich (like Bezos rich). He ended up going to another school.

I donate a moderate amount (under $10k) annually to my alma mater but it's enough that I get a particular person assigned to me when I want to give and stuff like that. Any time I want to come to campus, she'll arrange a private tour if I want one. I can also give a guest lecture if I ask, though I think that's not a normal "perk" but rather because I'm a younger alum and I work in an industry of interest to a lot of students, so the professor likes having me come in and explain from an industry perspective.

I don't get to the city of my alma mater often, but I did take her up on the tour offer a few years ago as I wanted to see all the changes. I was assigned one of their usual student tour guides, and she took me around. I think this is pretty standard. My kids are too young to be thinking about college yet, but I'm sure they'd do the same for them if I asked.

I worked in admissions at a not super selective university (ranked in the 70s or 80s) and even we had VIP tours. A celebrity or politician’s kid. Even if it was B list celebrity, it really was better than the distraction of them on a regular tour. We’d decide whether they got just a private tour guide or a tour by the Director or Admissions or even University president. So yes, there are VIP tours at Ivys, probably all the time.

Why I think ED/SEA is a throw away at any of the Ivies. The acceptance numbers for the early rounds are these type of candidates.

I came across this 2018 story in the Yale Daily News. I thought these kinds of things only happened in movies and laughed when I saw something like this depicted on “The Gilmore Girls”; guess I was wrong!

I know there are parents of big city top privates here. Do any of you know VIP kids who have gone on tours like these at ultra-selective schools? Do these kids always get in?
