This is my MIL. Guess where I am? Not with her. At all. She's completely alienated the family with this and similar behaviors.

MIL and my mother are both like this. It's all about them 24/7. If everyone agrees make it a game to see who can change the convo away from your MIL. Baffle her. Confuse her. Keep cutting her off and re-routing the conversation. They get away with it because they can. Don't let her.

My dad has always been like this. He never interrupts though because no one ever gets a chance to say anything.

I have noticed as our parents/aunts/uncles have gotten older, the conversation has taken on that quality. I don’t think it’s anxiety or self centered. Rather the back and forth of conversation and responding to what was said is too much so they monologue:

I’m trying very hard. Truly. It’s day 3 of 4. We all start with good intentions but within about 30 minutes we’re all ready to scream. We have people scheduled to take a shift being talked at. She can’t even let my six year old talk because she gets jealous the 6 year old is getting attention.

Sounds like my mother. She’s been talking at me since Saturday.

Is anyone else dealing with someone like this? I am currently hiding from my MIL. She talks at me all day long. At me because there is no conversation going as that requires two sides talking. As soon as anything else is said, she flips it back to herself constantly interrupting. Then we all ignore her and have our own conversations on the side and she threw a tantrum that we’re all ignoring her. It’s not just old age, she’s always been like this.
