For home daycare in Maryland is:

2 infants : 1 teacher

6 kids 2 years old age : 1 teacher

Usually there's always 2 or 3 teachers in the home daycare

Like our kids large daycare of 12 kids, they have 3 teachers total, and they are prek teachers

In Maryland in centers is 3 infants :1 teacher

12 or 15 kids 2 years old age : 1 teacher

MD is 1:3 for under age 2, then 1:6

(I'm in MD and have a 2.5yo)

Ignore the poster about "centers" - my kid attends one and this is the ratio

A lot of states are more lax than the DMV though

In MD it is 1 teacher for 8 kids including 2 babies in an in-home.

In a center if a mixed age group includes 1 or 2 infants the group cannot be larger than 9 and they need 2 staff members.
For a class of "toddlers" (ages 12-24 months) they need 3 teachers for 9 kids in a center
For a class of 2 year olds they can have 12 kids in a class but need 2 teachers in a center.

Nothing against in-homes at all but don't assume the ratios are better. They can be and often are worse, especially for infants. Not always certainly.

Ratios at that age are usually 6:1 or 8:1. You would need to look it up for your state.

Most daycare providers are preschool teachers

OP, you described a center, big school. Not a daycare home. You mentioned 18 kids, that's a center.

It seems high to me but if the kids seem happy and it’s well run I’d probably be ok with it.

I think it’s 12 kids at that age in MD but I’m not positive. When my kid was in a 2s preschool class ( half day twice a week) they had 12/2.

I would be uncomfortable with that too! But do you have other realistic options? I’ve bed working on moving out of state and finding any kind of daycare space in an accredited establishment seems like a lost cause — most of them quote 2-4 year wait lists. So I wouldn’t pull my kid until I had something else lined up, either a daycare I trusted or a nanny.

We recently moved out of state and enrolled our daughter in daycare. DD is 2.5 and there are 18 children in her class with 2 teachers. This definitely higher than what I was used to in DC.
I am not very comfortable but DH is being very stubborn about it and insists she goes. Just wanted to get your perspective.
