I say this as a UVA alum: WM’s goal is not to be just like UVA. Many universities are rethinking their entire data science curriculum because it is such a growing part of our working world.
It’s unfair to say that William & Mary just wants to be like UVA. They’re pretty different schools, and I think WM is fine with that.

You don’t need to go to a “top school for CS” to get a job that’s just as good as the ones that they do go to a “top school for CS.” So who cares, even if you’re right?
This is absolutely correct. But I still want my kids to go to a top school and do well.

Data Science as a major is currently offered at many schools. It is a viable choice for those who were not accepted for a CS major. Offering it as a major should not be big news.

college is useless in general for the most part
if you only want technical skill, bootcamp might be better, but you'll have harder time finding a job without college degree unless you can demonstrate some special talent like winning a national hacker contest or something like those

This never ceases to baffle me. As long as I can remember, which is a long time and spans a few countries, you hear about this massive lack of people with computer / math / engineering skills. Then, if anyone wants to acquire such skills - nope! It's really selective! Well, all those screaming about China's 300 million engineers / STEM is so much fun! / we're falling behind!!!! - let those who want to do it, do it.
How about Harvard and MIT admit all the students who are qualified??

There are more than a thousand colleges and universities that grant a CS degree. Nearly a thousand, engineering. No shortage of opportunities.
