It’s my understanding lower verbal is still ok. I heard the county is lessening verbal like sentence completion to make the test more inclusive for those who are not native English speakers.

Depends on what the areas are. Low verbal could be a challenge. If it's just high quantitative and high non-verbal, than likely to put in just advanced math. Low non verbal would matter little.

I would also encourage a retake. My son scored lower in the verbal, actually it was his lowest score in second grade. We thought it was odd because we felt that was his strongest area.. He consistently got good grades and thrived in Level 3, but couldn't get into level IV. We really felt it was that one score holding him back so we ended up doing a retake in grade 6, and he scored 18 points higher in verbal. He got accepted to Level IV...probably should've done that earlier, but he was doing great in school.

Are you at a center school? It might be a little hard with those scores. What was the iready? Find some good work samples. We're at a center and got in with these scores last year.
iready - math/reading both 93%
cogat VQN - 136 with the quantitative score being the highest.
I feel like we were on the cusp and the gbrs helped my kid get in. Kid had 3 - consistently observed and 1 - frequently observed.

They understand that any kid could have a bad day or get confused by the pictures in the CogAT V section. They're looking at the full picture, including the teacher rating, work samples, iready scores, and grades. If the majority of these point to a kid who is advanced, the lower CogAT is less important.

Probably but might need to appeal and provide additional documentation in the form of an outside diagnosis.

My child got in with these. supplement your package with samples and examples in your parental write-up of the weaker side (math, or writing) and hope for the best.

If you suspect the score is an outlier due to illness, distraction, etc., I’d get a WISC and not bother with retake. It’ll give you more in-depth info anyway.

If all other testing and GBRS tell a different story it might be fine. Also depends on the school - it’ll be a hurdle at high SES school where scores are high. Do you have reason to believe something is off about this one area?
