I am so confused about how to read these though. I got my daughter’s (2nd grade) and her lexile is 410L, but she’s also an advanced reader who is getting enrichment and reading well above grade level, per her teacher. But when I look on the Lexile website for books at that level, they’re all “step into reading level 1,” which she read in pre-K… I think I’m losing something in translation here but not sure what. Does anyone have a good resource I can use to try to make sense of these? Thanks!

Dibels is primarily for identifying kids at risk of learning disabilities (who may or may not be gifted). It's not designed to identify kids above grade level.

But it explicitly does identify kids above grade level. A kid like OP's scoring 430+ is above grade level in reading, and the full Dibels results will also show precisely where they are above grade level in terms of skills (they may be in grade level for some things and well above for others to get that composite score).

Now, the school may only care about kids who are below grade level, in terms of targeting for extra attention, because they stand to benefit more from bringing those kids up to grade level than in offering extra challenges to a kid reading above grade level.

I like Dibels because you get a print out of the child's strengths and needs with things you can do to target those area. DD's K teacher said that it can take a while to administer and it can take away from classroom time.

Now that DD is in 2nd grade they did use the score to provide enrichment to those above average. She and a small group go to another classroom a few times a week for 30 minutes. They are given a chapter book to read and then work on a packet to compete with comprehension questions, word searches, etc. It's mostly independent work (the teacher is working with other groups) and then sometimes meet with the teacher to review their work or they can work with other kids from their group. She is in a title 1 school I think in another school she might still be above average but would have more kids who also have similar scores so she wouldn't get the extra attention.

Gifted identification in 2nd means exactly zero for MCPS-scale infrastructure. It might earn a kid occasional enrichment moments in the classroom depending on the school and the teacher (for our DCs at a very good ES, such enrichment never lasted more than a month despite great intentions).

But the first move MCPS itself makes under the current system is CES placement (done by lottery following cutoffs by MAP scores) during grade 3 for a CES start in grade 4. Then the same thing happens for access to the MS magnets (done by lottery following cutoffs by MAP scores + grades on 1st report card) in grade 5 for a magnet start in grade 6.

All other testing and identification is just decorative because it has no organizational consequence, unless parents genuinely can't tell whether kids are curious / ahead / behind / able or unable to read with comprehension / capable of grade-level or above-grade-level math, etc.

All other testing is not just decorative. Much of it is used for determining if supports or interventions are needed.

As a parent I love DIBELS and the way you get back results on exactly what your kid is strong and weak at (if the teacher doesn't explain each of the components you can just Google them and it's very straightforward.)

Is Dibels helping teachers form reading groups? Is it factored for gifted identification in 2nd?

DIBELS is old. Everyone should now use Acadience. I don’t trust MCPS so I always take my kid to the free reading screenings hosted by places like the McLean school.

Here are the cut scores. For KG at the EOY, on-grade level is a composite of 420.

420

It's not like MAP scores that you can chart from year to year. Each grade level has a base score of 200, up to 450+, so the spring K score and the fall 1st grade score don't show growth the same way some other assessments do.

The target score for fall in first grade is 330, so your kiddo is well above average.

As a first grade teacher, I find this data to be much more useful than any other assessment data. It is especially good at showing growth and progress (or lack thereof). It really only measures fluency though, so if a kid has slower processing speeds they won’t do as well.

We have a lot of data/info for MAP testing from MCPS/DCUM, but not yet on DIBELS since it's the 2nd year of implementation.

What are parent and teacher thoughts on DIBELS so far?

Any info on scores and how it translates in the classroom?

My 1st grader's composite was 430+ (masking for increased anonymity) from September. ABV for reading on MP1 report card.

I have an older child that went through the previous MAP process, so am comparing/contrasting.
