Players moving to European leagues could become more common under the newly-minted USWNT coach, as Hayes has spent 12 years with Chelsea.
“There is still a huge amount of talent in this U.S. team,” Hayes wrote in a column for The Telegraph during the World Cup. “But with so many of the squad playing solely in the NWSL, it doesn’t offer enough diversity to their squad in terms of playing against different styles.”

Yes they have to clean house. I think women’s soccer has changed and the US is just stuck in the old ways that worked. I think the ‘23 World Cup team would have won in ‘15 and ‘19 pretty easily. The ‘23 team is more athletic, physically and skilled vs those teams but the competition has changed. The ‘15 and ‘19 teams would have lost in ‘23. Just go back and watch those games. The US would win on athleticism and speed.

The Olympics next summer will be a telling 1st test. But already, the team dynamic has shifted from last summer from being so polarizing. But looking to the future, it will take a few years before we can see the kind of talent she identifies to bring on board.
