Oh interesting. Thanks for clarifying!

9-10s can qualify for the spring championship meet in 200 breast, 200 back, and 200 fly. It happened last year, though I don't think any of those 10 year olds who qualified in those events choose to swim against 12 year olds in the March championship meet. Because why would they. All three events are 12&u events.

They will have one heat of 200 fly, whereas they could have multiples of 200 free.

And with 10&Us doing the long events, you have 50% chance of some kid signing up for it and puking in the pool -- happens more times than I would care to admit and is frustrating.

That’s the point. It keeps the number of 9 year olds down.

It's a good idea to swim a variety of events over a season. The favorite and best events can change from year to year. My daughter's coach wanted her to swim every event at least once per year.

I'm guessing it's not a mistake because 200 free and 200 IM were not offered for 9-10 year-olds at the same meet last year either. The meet manager probably likes to limit the 9-12 "distance" offerings on Friday to push developing kids to do different events. It also helps with timelines in terms of running an efficient session. You already have 8&u's in that session, adding multiple heats of slow 9 year-olds could make the session too long either for USA swimming rules or the meet manager's preferences.

If the available 200 offerings are too much of a reach for your kiddo, push them to do something new on Saturday/Sunday. All the 50 and 100 events are options for the 9-10 age group on Saturday/Sunday.

Anyway, I went to sign him up for the Mako Holiday meet at his coaches instruction and there’s no 200 free or IM listed. 200 back, breast, and fly are available (albeit on Friday night, ugh). Is there a reason the meet organizers would limit the events that way or could it be a mistake?

It's not a mistake - this is the same thing they offer at this meet in previous years.

I'm not sure what you really mean by "limit the events" since there is only finite amount of time available for the meet and they just can't offer every possible event for every age group given this constraint.

This meet is ambitious in that it is also including 8u("mini") events so that would impact what/how many events for the older age groups, again given that there is a set amount of time overall for the entire meet.

Not a mistake. They can't offer every event at every meet. It's not an Open.

It’s a little strange that they allowed the 200 back/breast/fly to be 12 and under but are only allowing 11-12 year olds to do the 200 free and 200 IM. I’m guessing maybe it was to keep the time of the sessions shorter. 9-10 year old 200 free and 200 IM can take a while, especially when it’s the kids who aren’t champs level fast. It was the same set up last year, so it’s not a mistake.
