No, she's just a permissive parent. They lack boundaries and don't know what it means to say no to their kids and they justify all high-risk behavior their kids engage in as being just fine. There's a lot of them here on DCUM.

I'd have to consider the big picture. How are their friendships, grades, family responsibility? Did they get high and drive, or just watch stupid movies and eat junk food? Any concerns about depression, or problems in the friend group?

I wouldn't encourage drugs. But I would make sure they knew not to drive or get in the car with someone who also did it.

One of my kids has anxiety and some behavior issues and I would worry about her doing it. My other kid is the kind of kid to occasionally do something dumb but in a not too irresponsible way, so I can imagine him doing it and it not being a huge problem.

Know your kid. Make sure they know how to draw a line and how to get out of a bad situation.

I drug tested him on and off for a year or so. He’s in college now and I know he’s drinking and smoking cigarettes there. I made it clear that if I suspected anything else, I would drug test him and take away his phone, car insurance, etc.

how old? if an older teen, say 17-18, guess what, the minute they go to college, all bets are off. There is SO much smoking in college, you'll be thanksful that's ALL he's doing.

If it's younger than that, I'd have a discussion and get them some help, depending on what is going on.

Figure out why. Is it to deal with some untreated thing. Get him therapy.

Btw that’s what I did for my son, now he is a successful adult. I’m sure he partakes still but he rarely drinks.

He likes to smoke pot and play piano.

But as for what I'd do generally, it depends on the kid. My child has a long history of depression, so it would concern me. A lot. I'd always be kind and nonjudgmental so that we maintain open lines of communication, but I would talk to them about life circumstances and feelings that they might be trying to avoid through numbing.

If my kid was emotionally stable I would be more chill about it.

But either way, I wouldn't permit it. I recognize that teens ignore rules and do a lot of things their parents tell them not to, but pot is illegal for kids under 18 and can be very harmful. My personal opinion is that giving a kid permission to do something like that doesn't help. You have to set some boundaries and this is a battle I'd pick.

Drug test every few days, treatment, figure out the source and try to stop it.
