That caught my eye, too. I didn't realize that she made $250k, but she was either so broke that she couldn't afford real attorneys to fight prosecution that could disbar her and render her unable to practice law or she simply was too cheap and didn't care if she practiced law again. My friend thinks she pissed off all the good attorneys in Bmore and no one wanted to represent her.

She simply doesn't seem very bright. Hard to believe she became Baltimore City's top prosecutor.

I don't think she was targeted as much as the feds regarded this as a slam-dunk win. Mosby's "travel business" had never had any clients or revenue and she kept no records about it, and Mosby herself said for the record that she wouldn't operate the company while in office. There were no business cards, no letterhead and no records of communications with vendors or potential clients.

Yet somehow this company suffered a hardship during the pandemic, even if it had never done any business.

The an easy win for the feds, who love easy wins. She also faces future charges that she made a false statement on a loan application, which also should be an easy win unless she pleas those charges away (perhaps to limit her prison time in this first case).

I recall she’s always had a shadow looming over her, but I don’t exactly remember why. That’s why I wasn’t surprised when she had charges filed against her.

Lots of Americans accidentally lie on mortgage forms.

But the FBI doesn’t assign a team to go through them to look for discrepancies. They save that for politicos they are looking to bust.

Vast majority of people who do what Mosley did on her forms get away with it. That’s most people who bought homes to rent out on AirBnb. But they don’t get caught because there’s no one to crack down on it.

So yeah, she broke the law. But she’s was also targeted for special scrutiny by law enforcement.

Everyone wanted her to no longer be the head prosecutor in Balitimore because she drove up the crime rates by refusing to prosecute anything. This charge was needed to get her to lose the election.

Yep, they only have enough resource to go after the big fish.

Same with the IRS.

Sure. If you want to be in the public eye you should expect that level of scrutiny. Similarly Trump probably wouldn’t be facing a fraud trial in NY right now if he wasn’t President. As with anyone though, if you don’t want to do the time then don’t do the crime.

As for Mosby, she most certainly is going to prison. I’d guess a sentence less than 3 years and probably serves only 12 months.

There’s a thread here from when the charges first came out. It’s definitely fraud but I don’t think the FBI/DOJ would have prosecuted if she wasn’t who she is and her husband wasn’t who he is (a city councilman.)

OP here. I guess my question is how bad was the fraud? Asking not as a Mosby fan, but as someone who cynically expects a certain degree of shakiness from baltimore politicians (keep in mind 2 of our last 5 mayors have left office after being indicted.)

Not the case itself, which I think I get: Mosby's got shady business practices and lied on mortgage forms. What I can't figure out if how big of a deal this is (i.e. just the tip of the iceberg in terms of corruption) OR someone in the prosecutor's office has it out for her? Or maybe it's a "both, and" situation. Any insights?
