Start getting your DD gender neutral stuff now so it can be passed down. Or be ok with DS in clothing marked to girls.
Don’t buy cutlery, plates, cups, etc that you think won’t work for both.

My son wears mostly hand me downs from friends. My friends children did not ruin their clothes. Just because some kids are rough on their clothes doesn't mean they all will.

My three year old uses some pink thing like his sister's old pink potty seat without issues.

Kids clothes don’t have to cost much. I bought everything from Carters until age 2, except for some nice outfits for formal pictures. I then branched out to nicer brands but I still get a lot of clothes from Kidizen.

Kids have as much clothing as you choose to buy them. I bought on sale/clearance and ahead so it wasn't crazy expensive but for some stuff you may want to get more neutral stuff. How expensive a child is, depends on the child. Mine doesn't care about clothing or shoes but some kids as teens do. Mine has other expensive hobbies and activities and that is far more expensive than what we paid when they were younger.

+1; one of the cheapest things we needed. 3 boys so we did pass down clothing but we didn’t save a ton of money by doing that

My boys have blasted through most pant knees since the age of two. Buy new pants. When the knees rip, make cut-offs.

My DD wore a lot of hand-me-downs from DS. Onesies, PJs, neutral/solid color pants or shirts are all fine, especially just for lounging at home. No need to get everything new for the baby stage. I will say that the sizing is different for girls versus boys clothing. Boys’ clothing runs bigger IME.

We reused as much as we possibly could and bought kid-specific outfits when needed. Our families sent a lot of clothing for each kid, too. Overall, it’s really not a huge cost difference having one of each gender, especially in the early years.

I should add that while boys clothes cost less, boys ruin clothes and unless it’s a special dress up outfit, you won’t resell anything from ages 3-10. Neither of my boys made it to the end of Prek-4 with 2 intact knees on the same pair of pants.

The cost issue we have run into is that the oldest one is not quite ready to give his crib, his scooter, his bike, etc. when the younger sibling is ready for the that item - so we have 2 of the same size of many expensive things.

Find your local consignment store.. most of my kids clothes are used and cost very little.

Newborns don't need shoes. And you can use the onesies while they're an infant - it's not like the boy will care.

My oldest is a college freshman, OP. Please understand that they will end up costing you the same, because college will be 100K+ a year by the time your kids get there, so new sets of clothes here and there REALLY won't make a difference down the road.

What are you talking about? You can reuse everything (what makes a car seat a girl's car seat??!!! And a blender?) As my 8 yo would tell you, there is no such thing as boy/girl pajamas. Some girls like trucks and some boys like unicorns and rainbows. They're pajamas. I agree, once they start walking, they need their own shoes, but that's it.
