The best one is the one tied to your bank - then you can see their account on your app, deal with issues at your regular bank, etc.

My 13 yo showed me how to set it up and send her money since her friends use it. It’s really convenient when she goes out to lunch or to Starbucks.

NP. Been considering this, but my kid is not great with money management (we are working on this), and I fear he may overspend what he has in his account. Can't find a clear answer on the Capital One site (sounds like they try not to permit it, but might and if they do you are liable), but any idea if they will let him go negative? I've always avoided debit cards for fear of fraud and overdraft.

We have USAA and opened an account in our kid's name, which is attached to ours. He has an iPhone so I transfer money using Apple Cash and can track his spending, add $ when needed, etc.

See if your bank or credit union offers “student” checking accounts. That makes it easier for you to transfer money back and forth, they’ll get a debit card for spending, and they can use it on into their college years.

Many student accounts also offer apps to help kids track and budget their spending. So they can see at a glance just how much of their allowance went to Starbucks last month!

I use capital one's Money teen checking account. I get a text when it is used and he can use the app to login just like I do

We used the GreenLight card for a little while and it was fine, app worked well and kid had no issues using the card (Mastercard), but we disliked the monthly fee and the constant messages about using the app to start investing, etc etc. We switched to the Capitol One teen card and have been very pleased. No fees, no constant upsell to engage with other products, no issues whatsover.
