We have no idea what kind of students OP’s kids are, but I teach in a MS magnet and some of my strongest students did ES abroad.

OP here - I think PP probably meant their English was not going to be at the highest, "best of the best" level, which is probably true.

I looked at the programs, APEX seems interesting but I don't know if it is necessary.

WJ is being rezoned for Woodward. So, just be aware that your kid could end up at Woodward depending on where you live. No one knows what Woodward will look like in terms of student body.

+1... I think OP has enough going on right now to not worry about it, but her kids could be the best of the best!

WJ is a great high school; look into APEX and ACES in-house programs for science oriented kid. Descriptions and contacts are on the web site. https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/wjhs/programs/ They also have every type of club!

OP magnets often involve long, early morning bus rides (and the journey home) which in bad weather is cripplingly unpleasant.

Tilden and WJ are both more than fine and I wouldn’t bother scrambling to try to get into a magnet that’s far away from their home school. But info on all the magnet programs is here: https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/specialprograms/

Hello!

We will soon be moving to MoCo. We have lived abroad for some time, kids go to school there. The oldest kid will start WJ in the fall, and another kid will start at Tilden. Academically, both kids are doing well; the oldest one competed in physics at the state-level.

What should we know? Does the 8th grader need to try to apply to some kind of magnet? Is that even possible from abroad?
