We upgraded to a suite with club access. The club was nice- had breakfast and light snacks and food that sufficed for dinner. Wouldn’t really make or break my stay though.

If both rooms are exactly the same and the only difference is club access, I’d take the free room. If I recall correctly they were farther away.

Also, they had awful water bugs there. They looked like roaches. I think they’re a problem through Kauai but we were so grossed out we’d probably never go back.

The hotel grounds were great though and the pool is so fun

We were just there a couple of months ago. Spectacular. We stayed club level on points and it was worth it, but it would’ve been absurdly expensive in cash, so whether it’s worth your cash (a club room was about $1400/night when we were there) or not, only you can say. Our room was beautiful but it was waaaay on the far side of the resort, far from the lounge and pools, so it was indeed a hike. Club level is nice because there aren’t a lot of food options super close, so we saved time and money by eating there every morning and most evenings. But again, it comes at quite a premium.

I’m not sure you can pay cash and upgrade to the club room with points, as you asked in your post (disclosure I’m a Marriott person and know less about Hyatt). My understanding is that the club rooms are capped so it doesn’t get too crowded, so if there are not club rooms available on points, you may not be able to pay cash and upgrade with points. Again, Hyatt is not my first or even second program of choice, but I’m sure you can call and they’ll tell you either way.

WAIT: I just remembered. Did you search for a room for 2adults/2kids? They don’t allow you to book a club level room on points for four. They cap it at 2adults/1 kid bc they cannot guarantee you two beds in a club room (that wing evidently mostly has king beds). If you can book for 2 adults/1 kid, do that and then call and hope to be put into a room with two beds. Otherwise you can pay for a rollaway for the second kid. I had that problem too, so I called and that’s what they told me. I booked 2/1, then called a few days before check in and requested two beds.

I am incredibly biased about the Grand Hyatt Kauai as my H and I were married there. I haven't been there in a long time but I would go again in a second.

Are you using hotel points and have any status with Hyatt? Right before Covid we went to Maui and used Hilton points to book a standard double room at the Grand Wailea. My H was Diamond and upon arrival they upgraded us to a king bed room on the club level. Our kid was perfectly happy using the sofabed. Are there king bed point rooms available? I don't think kids would care about sleeping on a sofabed, if that gives you more of what you wanted from the resort.

Enjoy Kauai and I will share my tip I always share: when driving up to Waimea Canyon, drive all the way to the end of the road (past Kalalau Lookout) to Pu'u O Kila Lookout, that lookout is the best one. Also, for some reason the Strawberry Daiquiris at the Hyatt were the best I've ever had. 

I'm so bummed Hyatt wasn't able to renovate Coco Palms. That was the most magical place on Earth let me tell you!

We just splurged on Hawaii and I have zero regrets.

We honeymooned there. Ahh, good times.

If you are club level at the Grand Hyatt Kauai you are on the far side of the property away from the pools. With kids, I much prefer being on the side close to the pools with easy access to go back and forth to our room.

What I can tell is another difference is the standard rooms they offer with points are parking lot views which is a bummer. But if the room is otherwise free and most time will not be spent in the room with kids, does it matter??

If you were to eat breakfast at the club level, you would miss out on the best coffee truck/shack with the best muffins just five minutes away. Eden Coffee in Koloa.

This is why we keep accumulating points(rather than using them) — I don’t like the limited, standard offerings of rooms on points.

During the last two trips (1 international) we have upgraded to club level and have been so happy that we did. When we got back late after site seeing, it was nice to go to the club for some snacks and tea before bed. The club also has a happy hour food spread that can stand in for a full dinner. The best though was breakfast. It was so nice not having to get us and the kids ready to venture out early when we could just go to the club for a leisurely breakfast before heading out.

We’re planning a trip to Kauai with our kids (5 and 8) and hoping to book 6 or 7 nights here with points. But the only room available with points for us right now is the standard double queen room for 35k per night.

I was hoping to have the club access room available as an option and was willing to pay more points for it (both for the club access and for the better room view).

Is it worth it still to just do the standard room (no view) for the free stay with points or should we pay the regular rate for a better room with a view and upgrade to club access with points?

We’d be staying at Hyatt for one week out of a two week stay on Kauai. The second week would be on the northern coast at and Airbnb with an ocean view.
