The school will also have an impression of what your kid is like and can draw on years of experience with previous kids getting accepted into and then going to these schools.
That might be a set of questions you could ask your current school. What schools do you think he can get in? What schools do you see him fitting in to. What schools do you recommend we look at most strongly for him based on your experience?
They might be reticent to be completely frank because they have experience with previous parents who have had their hearts set on particular schools or have unrealistic views of their children’s desirability. But if you can get across to them that you have an open mind and are just looking for information, you may very well get some sage (and free) advice.
