A week—so want to minimize travel time/stay in on location or maybe two close together locations.

Mexico City. So much to see and amazing food. The architecture of the city and great museums. So many amazing restaurants. I ate different international cuisine most days on top of excellent Mexican cuisine. We hired a private tourist guide who drove us and gave us tour with talk on different sites.

Sevilla and/or Granada, plus one or two of the white villages in the mountains. We enjoyed Vejer de la Frontera.

If you like foodie vacations, I wouldn’t recommend Costa Rica. I enjoyed the place very much but didn’t like the food we ate there. You go there for nature and activities like ziplining and horseback riding.

I would do San Sebastian, Ljubjlana, or split/Dubrovnik. Everywhere is overtouristed, Ljubjlana less than the other locations, but if you avoid July/august it isn’t horrific.

Go to San Sebastián. I promise this is the answer. You sound just like us with what you like and where you’ve been.

I have not done meaningful research on Croatia and am very intrigued but a have a vague impression that it is overtouristed. But probably no more so than the other major European cities? I should learn more.

Or Fly to Lyon and make your way to Annecy, very cute town to explore. Lyon has excellent dining.
Or Fly to Milan and go to Como which is 45 min from the airport. Stay in Bellagio.

I am interested in Amsterdam. We went to Lyon once about 10 years ago and really liked it. Have not been to Como but liked my brief exposure to Italian lakes 20 years ago.

I've found most of the airbnb's in Savannah don't have refund policies available so I stay at a hotel.

Both Charleston and Savannah have charming small towns around them and May is a nice time to visit.

We have family in Savannah so spend time there each year. I like it a lot—but not this trip.

I am looking for ideas for a weeklong trip with my husband, without our kids, to celebrate my 50th in May. I don’t want a beach or resort vacation. We love food and architecture and wandering through cities; charming small towns and beautiful landscapes are welcome. I don’t want to do a more adventure travel thing that it would be better to do with our teens. I am thinking probably Europe, though open to Central or South America. We don’t have that much time so probably would only be in one location, unless traveling between small towns. We love Paris and Rome but have been there many times, so that is not this trip. We have done a couple trips to Umbria and Tuscany before and will be in the Loire Valley to visit family on a different trip next year. We have been to Lisbon and London and Barcelona fairly recently, so not those. Some places we have not been for many years that are interesting to me as a base: Seville (and environs); Vienna (and maybe Salzburg?). I have never been to Germany, or the Netherlands or the Nordic countries or Hungary or Croatia, or lots of other places. And I have been very few places in the Americas (Belize, Costa Rica). What would you recommend for a grown-ups week in May?
