If this is the main gravy, you need access to the turkey juices for flavor. I can see your stress.

It’s so bizarre to me that the person making the main dish would not also make the gravy…

Adding mushrooms to a meat based gravy probably isn’t what vegetarians are looking for.

On the presumption that I will provide a mushroom gravy, does anyone have any suggestions? My searches to-date have not led me to anything inspirational — but that may simply be my dislike of gravy.

I would go back to the host and tell her that you need a different assignment. No one wants to eat gravy made by someone who both dislikes it and doesn't know how to make it.

Or ask the host if they have a tried and true recipe, since this seems to be something on their standard menu.

The Mean Chef mushroom gravy, which can be found online, is my all-time favorite gravy recipe. Though we aren’t vegetarian, we actually usually make it with vegetable broth. It’s easy to make, has a great texture, is a good gravy option for vegetarians (which has been appreciated at our Thanksgiving table), and usually leads to multiple requests for the recipe.

Balduccis gravy is really good. You’d have to add mushrooms

They actually have a good one at Trader Joes.

Whole Foods has a pre-made Mushroom Gravy that they have out around Thanksgiving time. As longtime vegetarians, it is good and heats up nicely (preferably in a pot, but microwave works too).

If your hosts don't hate gravy, it's nearly impossible to not like a gravy. Don't overthink it.

I am confused…Does the host want mushroom gravy for the turkey? Or, does she want a vegetarian option? I found this recipe which looks good.

Just buy the store-bought and add in the dried mushrooms mentioned above. They will rehydrate on heating.

Store-bought mushroom gravy isn't great for some reason, and I love mushrooms. But since you don't enjoy this task, just buy the store-bought and bring to the dinner. I would find a variety of dried mushrooms (including porcini, which are very flavorful), rehydrate them, then cook in a roux of butter and flour with salt and pepper. Some people add olive oil, and rosemary or other herbs, or use garlic instead of pepper.

I will be a guest this Thanksgiving at a close friend’s celebration. The hosting household delegates some of the food items; I have been assigned mushroom gravy. I do not enjoy gravy, and I last made gravy 15+ years ago.
