This is a weird comment. The stretch doesn't make jeans fit bigger people, that's the sizing. Stretch just makes denim softer and more comfortable. I'd say the trend toward comfort and athleisure influenced that more than anything else.
OP, some brands, like Mother, have a little scale that shows how rigid/stretchy their jeans are. I have a couple pairs of rigid denim from them (100% cotton) but I prefer the ones that have a bit a of stretch (and I am not particularly big, size 4-6).
