This is the approach I would take. Kids sometimes have to ask. Just b/c someone didn't invite doesn't mean that they wouldn't like to have you join them.

If you have a neighbor child who doesn’t have tons of friends, they’d probably love an invitation. You could cast a wider net.

Why is this middle school suicide? My oldest has done this several times. He’s started with younger siblings and ended up meeting friends. He also has no plans yet this year so it may happen again.

Did he say he's upset about it? He might love to be the one at the door giving out candy to other kids. And if a kid he knows comes by and he wants to join, then go ahead.

I know, Halloween has turned into this stressful holiday with big social expectations. It’s hard for many kids who don’t have an active & established friend group. I hate it esp in middle school, bc they are more in charge of the social plans & there is always last minute scrambling, friends being left out, etc.
Dont make a big deal out of it, I agree, blame the Covid & say you are laying low this year due to that…ask what kind of candy he likes & get that & watch a scary movie or something Halloween themed.

I think parents need to stop worrying about their home situation and just invite a few friends. I swear no one cares how messy or chaotic the house is

Don't make a big deal of him not having plans. He may be okay with it until you start harping on it. Great night to go to a haunted house or other event since won't be as crowded. Or watch some YouTube videos and you each try your hands at zombie makeup to greet TnT that come to your door.

My 7th grader is in the same boat. Trying to make plans with his one good friend, but it’s uncertain and getting awkward. Just commiserating.

Order his favorite dinner...gets lots of his candy favorites and watch a Halloween themed movie. Call it the Covid year celebration.

My 6th grader has no one to trick or treat with and I feel terrible. No siblings or cousins and no plans with friends or invitations this year. The past few years, I had a couple friends over for pizza and trick or treating. But, we just got over Covid last week and things were crazy at my house. I didn’t have my act together enough to make plans. I guess we aren’t close enough with anyone to be invited anywhere either. I’m trying to make it fun, but it stinks. I know it’s a big party holiday for kids and it’s not fun if my child feels left out. He doesn’t have many friends and I hate Halloween
