It's definitely not exclusive to Capitol Hill but this incident happened on the Hill and there have been MANY similar incidents on the Hill. Also as someone who lives here, the number of times every week I see a near miss like this is alarming. I and all other parents I know are super vigilant about crossing streets but as this incident shows, even being vigilant doesn't help when someone comes screaming down a street and blows through a sign or a light, which happens a lot.
I know Brookland has had similar issues and is also a neighborhood with a lot of families with young kids. But the combination of tons of families, little kids, lots of intersections with just stop signs or even crosswalks without stop signs (which should be yielded to but we all know in DC drivers don't care), and a lot of drivers using the neighborhood as a commuter route from suburbs into the city and back out, means we just deal with a lot of incidents like this. The recent streetscape of Maryland NE helped but what are we supposed to do -- install traffic calming measures on every inch of Ward 6 roads? We need stiffer penalties for speeders, people who blow through lights and stop signs, more speed and red light cams, etc.
I hope the current work on Florida Avenue helps slow people down as well, though I haven't seen what that's supposed to look like in the end. Though I saw they are widening sidewalks which is a good start -- I know they've had problems there with cars speeding, losing control, and crashing into houses or the wall around the Gallaudet campus. So pedestrians aren't even safe on the sidewalk.
It's out of control.
