Stats is an extra math, to be taken alongside AP Calc (AB or BC).

It should never be taken as an alternative to AP Calc unless you want your kid rejected from most colleges.

General education math classes include (introductory) statistics, linear algebra, differential equations, and (maybe) discrete math.

Needless to say, these classes are not the end of the line for anything.

+1 for AP Statistics.

Multivariable is useful for physics, statistics is useful for everything including physics.

The schools with IB programs also have additional math options in 11th and 12th, IB Math Applications and IB Math Analysis.

Dual enrollment at Montgomery College is available to all students in MCPS.

OP - what students choose depends on their interests after high school.

For STEM interested students most will do 9th HAlg2 —> 10th HPrecalc —> 11th AP BC Calc —> 12th Multi-Variable Calculus
Others may do 11th AP AB Calc —> AP BC Calc
Students not interested in STEM may choose 11th Calc with Applications and 12th AP Statistics.

My recommendation for all students who have the ability to get to and take AP BC Calculus is to do so. If they are STEM bound they need it and should repeat the last level of math in their first year at college. If they are not STEM bound, a 4 or 5 on AP BC Calculus test satisfies public university math distribution requirements, which means the student doesn’t have to take math in college.

You may want to explore the magnets. They have some high-level math classes. Also, some schools offer dual credit classes where kids can take college classes.

In our school it is common for students to take AB then BC because the BC teacher is very tough

Depends on the student, but for truly advanced kids, I think it makes sense to do BC in 11th and AP stars in 12th. BC repeats all the AB content and then adds on, so I would not want to do both AB and BC

Our child entered MCPS in 6th and was put in the regular higher level sequence that leads to Alg 2 in 9th, Precal in 10th and Calc in 11th. What do most students take in 12th? It looks like you can't opt out of math senior year so do most kids do Calc AB in 11th and BC in 12th or do they take something different in 12th?
