In kindergarten we took two days off to travel and in eighth grade we took one day off to catch a flight the day before before Thanksgiving break.

As a teacher, IMO some families think nothing of missing a week of school a few times a year for a cruise or Disney, and others do everything possible to only miss for things like a family wedding or funeral, and limit it to a couple days. Vast majority are there unless ill.

If the kids are young and advanced, no one will care. If they are older or struggling with academics, it will be frustrating.

There are so many 3 or 4 day weeks in our district that when the kids were in elementary school, we usually took a weeklong trip during one of those weeks. Just slightly lessened the amount of school the kids missed. Not a big deal at all, but I wouldn't do it more than a few days per year or if my kids were struggling academically. Middle school was iffy, but by high school they did not want to miss school for "optional" things like family vacation.

In elementary school, we did every year. Up to a week at a time. In middle school- here and there but tried to limit it to 1-2 days. In high school, rarely to never. Only for something like a very important family event and kept very minimal (like missing a Friday to travel to a family wedding out of town etc).

My kid is in elementary and we pull him out for travel every year. Pulling him out for a week this fall for big family trip. It’s not a big deal. He is doing well in school. I might hesitate maybe if he wasn’t doing well.

I figure do it now is best and get in a lot of traveling before middle school hits and missing a week of school and assignments is a bigger deal.

One of my good friends, her dad pulled her out of either middle or high school for 3-4 weeks. I can’t remember which. He told her don’t let school get in the way of traveling and your experiences.

It's hard on the kids and annoying for teachers especially in high school...but lots of people do it.

Probably once or twice a year. We just did it for Columbus weekend because we went to Rehoboth to see friends and they were all off, my kid ( in private) was not. They counted it as an excused absence.
She’s in 6th.

We did when kids were under 10. Not frequent, but we would usually take a week for spring break in late Jan or early Feb because to was significantly less to travel then vs March/April

In my experience, ES and even MS don’t really care. In HS they start being strict about it.

How often do you travel during the school year, like on weekends and take the kids out of school for Monday/Tuesday or any other combo. Just checking to see if this is normal?? I know a mom who is constantly traveling and her kids are missing school. How is she getting away with this? Is she claiming they are sick to the attendance clerk?
