We wanted to turn our carport into a garage. Unfortunately, due to code and being too close to our neighbor's property line, we could not. And so, we still have a carport

Do other homes in your neighborhood have garages, carports or neither? If they have garages and you don’t, it may make re-sale harder.

Don’t forget heating/cooling, adding electrical outlets/lighting. It is actually a lot of work to convert it into useful living space. I think a sunroom is best, but then it is a very odd location with typically little privacy.

I think the best option is an enclosed garage for storage to free up room in the home.

We turned ours into a screened porch. It was cheap due to using existing structure (around 10K) and immediately gave function and improved aesthetics.

Would you actually park in a garage? Many people use their garage for storage so if you remove the carport for a new conditioned space you’d want to make sure to allocate a room that can be used for things that are stored in a garage - bikes, gardening equipment- or build a nice size shed in your backyard. But from someone who lives in a split level with the laundry in the creepy dusty basement utility room I would love a nice laundry room somewhere else in the house.

Do you have street parking? I value living space over car space, but only if you have an alternative place to park.

When I was a kid we turned a carport into a family room with bedroom suite over.

Depends how much stuff you have, whether you have kids and whether it's a priority to park your car in a garage.

If you have kids an extended room would be really useful. I could also see how a garage with the washer and dryer would improve your life because you could also store stuff there in addition to parking your car.

Wondering. Our carport is very small and fits a sedan or small suv. The beams holding the carport up are in bad condition and so is the ceiling of the carport. Since we live in a split level space is limited as it is. What would bring the most return value and what could be the best use of this space? we don't have a laundry room. Our washer/dryer is in a cramped utility room in the basement. Our dining area is small as well and next to the kitchen. Our living room is there as soon as you enter through the front door with a wall separating the living room from the kitchen area. We are also thinking of taking down that wall but I read that structural issues or other issues have to be looked at first before any renovations.
