If he sticks with economics he has econometrics ahead…that course is a killer. If he can minor in economics without doing econometrics then he should switch to a minor; if a minor requires econometrics just drop economics. Accounting is a great choice for a major; at some schools you can do 5 years and have enough credits to take the CPA; he should see if his school has this option.

Drop the econ. No need. And it isn’t helpful unless you’re very good at math.

Accounting pays well and there are lots of jobs but it is so boring.

If your focus is on the job market, the econ is unnecessary. It's a great market for accounting grads, and even the popular econ jobs (e.g., wall street, consulting) would happily hire an accounting grad.

If he wants to go to grad school in econ, then econometrics is essential.

This exact situation happened to me when I was in college. I was going to double major in economics and accounting until I hit Econometrics taught by a heavily accented TA at 8:00am. Could I have muddled through and passed? Yes. It was completely unnecessary to my career, though. No one in the accounting field cares if you have a double major or any minors. The only question is whether you qualify to sit for the CPA exam.

That said, have your son take a look at the CPA requirements in the state(s) where he wants to end up after graduation. There's a decent chance the requirements do not line up exactly with his required coursework, particularly if he's in school in a different state than he would plan to work. Now is an excellent time to take the additional Financial Accounting class or random ethics credits that he will eventually need.

I am a current CPA and my DS is a current college senior majoring in accounting. They will have get a great job with an accounting degree and a CPA. Econ would be a great minor. The 150 credits and CPA is all that they need.

Drop the econ double major. Focus on accounting if he's going the CPA route. Can keep as a minor if he's accumulated a decent amount of econ credits already.

I think double major is mainly for when they are not really sure what they are going to do

He doesn't need Econ if he is aiming for Accounting / CPA.

Junior? Consult the school...an academic advisor or professor. Certainly not a thread full of Ken's and Karen's.

Suggest downshifting to an econ minor if it doesn't require econometrics.

The benefit of a double major is he MAY have enough credits to sit for the CPA w/o a masters depending on how many extra credits he takes. The econ add isn't necessarily an added benefit on its own...

My son is currently a college junior, with a double Accounting and Economics major. He called me this morning asking if he should drop the economics major -- he's currently in a required econ stats class where he's really struggling, and has him rethinking, with a week until he registers for spring classes.

I didn't know what to tell him, I'm an RN! He really likes accounting and is planning to get his CPA while in college, so that's his path. Would an economics major, in addition to accounting, be any value added? I was thinking it might open up other career opportunities for him, but not sure if it's worth it now. Perhaps an MBA down the line would be move valuable.

I appreciate any insight from accounting and economics folks!
