I’m in this situation. I don’t want to break off from the main book club especially since I’m not a leader type but it is increasingly just a social club of moms I don’t particularly enjoy.

Maybe even start one yourself? Do you have a neighborhood FB or NextDoor page? Post that you want a real bookclub that plans to read and discuss books. If you have a preferred style (historical, romance, modern fiction) say that, too. See who responds with interest.

OP I see a lot of these groups on meet up dot com near where I live in Los Angeles - they always seem to meet at bars, wine bars, etc. I think they pose as book clubs but they're really about socializing and drinking.
Having said that, I do not know where you meet the real book club people. I suspect you stumble across them by knowing one member who may or may not invite you along?

Would be interesting to know the title of the books assigned to read by your "book club".
Not sure, but I suspect similar feelngs are experienced by some men who enter "gentlemen's clubs" expecting to learn about manners and rules of social etiquette.

There's two types of book groups, ones where they discuss the book and ones where they hang out and socialize. I'm not a fan of the latter, but it probably means you need to find a new group.

I joined a local women's only book club.
However, the woman who organizes the book club has us meet at a neighborhood bar and grill sports place, with large tvs with games on. We usually sit at 2 or 3 longer tables near the bar area.
We never talk about the books we read.
It drives me crazy. I can't hear anyone talk. Women show up who didn't even read the book for that month.
Am I just taking these book clubs too seriously? I wanted to discuss the book. LoL.
