Subject: DC ranked almost last for home and community safety
We’ve been failed by every level of elected official from ANC, to council, to mayor. They’ve spent the last two years on bike lanes and hunting down parks and schools to rename instead of focusing on the crime crisis. They are unserious people, yet will easily be reelected.

Your family/kids aren’t in DC. Your kids don’t go to school in DC. You probably aren’t in DC late at night, or spending much time anywhere except inside your secure office. If you take the Metro, your car isn’t in DC to be stolen/carjacked (I realize some people are afraid of the Metro). Lots of differences.

+1, DH and I lived in DC for 5 years and then migrated out to VA. Now we literally only set foot in DC to go to work, where we park in our secure buildings. We used to have occasional date nights in DC after work, but we don’t anymore because it’s not worth it. It’s really sad.

Yes, Democratic leaders with their around the clock armed security details see no reason to care about law and order of the ordinary citizen. Just care about the money they will make in, but more importantly once they leave office.

Some kind of Stockholm Syndrome? Insane. As a city dweller I am constantly dismayed by my options come voting time. We don't have ranked voting, so very few reasonable candidates ever make it into the actual election. It sucks so much.

A lot different if you drive to a parking garage in your office. Taking the metro is a different story depending on your route.

My office has security guards. My home doesn’t. I think that’s a pretty big difference.

Yeah, by virtue of being the capital city, we’re more likely to be the target of a terrorist attack — both domestic and foreign.
This has zero to do with local government. If this aspect of living here troubles you, then leave. New York would also be a problematic choice.

I'm upset by it OP. I was born here and we are being failed at historic levels by our elected officials. Even though we've only had our car stolen (I can't believe I'm saying that), there is an atmosphere of danger and unpredictability everywhere that I have never experienced before. There is also an almost intolerable level of apologists for crime (our elected officials + an complete oversaturation of smug ultraliberal residents) that just rubs salt in the all of this. IUnder Mayor Williams this town was great, and it could be a fantastic place to live again. For now, I'd pause and really research where to live in the DMV if I were you.

Well, I guess you can move to Columbia, MD and still "be here for work" as long as you don't have to go into downtown every day?
Most of the "cities" that are even in the top 50 are not "real" cities compared to the big cities which are all slammed at the bottom of this list but have great, good, mediocre, and bad areas to live in them while those areas also have world class amenities that you're just not gonna find in ... Scottsdale AZ or Tallahassee FL.
