Differentiation occurs on the iPad. Other than that, good luck.

My kid is gifted in math. His kindergarten teacher realized this and gave him some extension activities. There were times in his elementary years he got more advanced content and years where he didn’t get much. He still loves math and easily made it into pre-algebra. I have also worked with many very bright kids in pre-k and K. None of them have seemed particularly bored in kindergarten. The day is so busy and fast moving.

APS isn’t even managing the average students well… Teachers are too busy dealing with kids who don’t speak any English and those with behavioral issues.

So yeah, your advanced (grade 2 math in K isn’t “gifted”) child is going to be bored.

But they all are. Race to the bottom. Hooray!

Yes. This is what I was trying to say. Exactly!

My child is now in middle school and, while he’s still a strong math student, other kids caught up and he’s not the extreme outlier (the teacher’s words) that he was in early elementary.

This is pretty normal. OP, if you must, supplement at home. Don't expect your K student to get 2nd grade math at school. K is all about learning to be a student and all the social skills and responsibilities that come along with that.

What is the preschool's feedback as far as how they are now (is the child bored) are they that far advanced in other areas besides math? Knowing what I know about APS, I agree with one of the other posters, you might be disappointed with APS if you stick with public school and have such a gifted child.

I've been teaching a long time. Your kid will be fine. Supplement at home or through after school programs. They'll manage any boredom they do feel because the delight of kindergarten will help. Most kids I've known who are 2-4 years ahead take great pleasure in being that far ahead. And if in a year, it isn't working, you'll have more info then. Public schools and quite frankly, nearly all private schools, labeled gifted or not, are not able to meet the needs of gifted learners.

I’m sure I will be sorry I asked, but how do you know your rising kindergartner is able to solve second-grade level math problems?

1. She probably has some skills that are 2nd grade level but is missing other skills that are taught in K and 1st.

2. She needs to learn to be bored, there’s no meaningful acceleration in elementary school.

Honestly, learning how to deal with boredom is an important skill too.

And your child will not be the only one coming into K doing harder math.

LOL, no.

If your child’s ahead in math, you’re going to have to supplement at home.

Does anyone have experience with gifted services as an incoming Kindergartener in APS? Our daughter is already doing second grade math and not starting K until fall 2024. Don't want her to be bored. Thanks!
