For lower school, I think it is the top 2 students per class for the academic award.

The leadership award is subjective and it can vary how many kids per grade receive the award.

Is it a similar A- or so average like cum laude?

I'm guessing you haven't asked his teacher?

At lower school prize day they recognize the top 10% of the class and then the give “the book” to the top 1 or 2 boys. There are also various other awards for citizenship, arts, etc. Upper School Prize day is less focused on each grade level, mostly gives out awards to juniors and seniors, recognizes boys who will fellowships, etc. It’s not uncommon for boys to go through their entire 4-12 at STA and never win a prize. They do mostly recognize the few top top students repeatedly.

From the student Handbook;
The Cum Laude Society
Founded in 1906 to recognize outstanding scholarship at the secondary level, the Cum Laude Society has had a St. Albans chapter since 1934. Membership is limited to the top twenty percent of the graduating class, chosen both for high academic achievement in a rigorous program of study and for exemplary character. Early induction of the top ten percent occurs in the fall, with the full complement recognized at a
special service of induction in the spring.

I doubt it is either a fixed % or a fixed GPA. I think it is partly subjective (more rigorous choice of classes more likely to be selected).

No. My son had that average and did not receive it.

There is no weighting of grades to determine who qualifies, which means that some boys who take advanced classes and are viewed by classmates as top students end up not qualifying.

Cum Laude at STA does take into account rigor. It doesn't at NCS.

Surely nobody was still online/hybrid in the 22-23 school year.

Seniors were hybrid in MS.

I believe Cum Laude is the top ten percent of the class based on GPA.

That's sounds about right. My son is at 91-92 and by his calculation (of knowing who typically does better or worse than he does in school) he's probably right at the line (above or below)
