He needs to visit. They want to see interest. Still a difficult admit from oos so get happy about a backup.

He should apply to other big 10 schools as a back up plan. Wisconsin may be a possibility, Indiana and Iowa would be easier.

My son loves UMich. He had never even been there yet. He is a solid student and is a strong athlete but not college recruit type athlete.
That's a strong profile. I would apply EA and see how it goes. Write good essays. Try to personalize the essays to the school. For example, if he's writing about wanting to attend Engineering, talk about something really specific - a professor's research that you want to be a part of, or even the statue outside the building, etc. - to show how into the school you are. Doesn't always work but better than a generic essay.

The kids I know who got in had all As (A or A minus).

At our school Michigan is an Ivy level admit. A 4.4/1450 would unfortunately not cut it.

Depends. What major? CS and Business are direct admits, and are extremely competitive for OOS kids. Other majors may be easier.

In state that’s 100% admit EA. OOO probably EA deferral and RD waitlist. UMich had a record size freshman class this year so bar is even higher.
