My ring is a 1.5 carat pear. To me it is the perfect balance of looking substantial combined with not getting in the way. We are about to have our 6th anniversary, but for 10? I would like a tennis bracelet over an engagement ring stone upgrade -- and I'd wear it too.

Sounds like you can afford it, but I have a 2.5 and honestly it's big. I don't see rings as big as mine very often (though, as another PP mentioned, shape matters, and mine looks a little bigger than it actually is because of the shape). It's stunning and I love it, but it's not so much everyday jewelry (as in I don't wear it when I work from home, or for errands). So I think it depends on what you want and whether you see yourself wearing it.

Depends on the size of your hand. Mine is 1.5 and I like it. When I am home in the Midwest, my ring looks huge and blingy. When I am in NoVa (at half your HHI) my ring is on the small side of normal. I think 2-2.5 is more standard among people who care about status and appearances.

Ask yourself if you will wear a larger ring or if anyone will even notice or care for more than a day. I know the cost is probably not a big deal, but I’d have lots of frivolous things I’d rather buy.

The size varies by shape. My sister and I both have just over 2 carats, but hers looks bigger because she has brilliant cut.

+1, for me it's 100% about wanting my every day jewelry to be somewhat understated so that I can wear them to the gym, to walk the dog, whatever, and not think about it catching on something or annoying me.

If I were in OP's situation, I'd suggest another piece of jewelry that might be more "special occasion" whether another ring or a necklace or earrings. But I wouldn't want to change out the stone in my engagement ring for something larger now that I'm used to the one I have.

I also have 1.75 and redid setting at 10 yrs. I’m glad I kept my original diamond. I love the ring and wear it all the time.

Mine is around 1.5 and I like the size. For our 10 year anniversary I decided to get a 5 stone diamond ring instead of upgrade. I love it. I wear it on my right hand when I'm wearing my engagement/wedding ring on my left. Occasionally I wear it on my left by itself. If you like your current engagement ring consider if there's another piece of jewelry you might like instead.

At your HHI I think 1.5ct is pretty standard if someone wears a ring. 1-2cts is normal.

If you don't want the ring- tell him!

There's not really a standard, and with lab diamonds and moissanites, you are seeing the average size grow larger. It also depends on your hand and finger size.

If you're happy with your stone, why not spend the money on a great trip instead?

DH andI are celebrating our 10th wedding anniversary and he offered to upgrade the stone in my engagement ring (1.25 ct) to a 2.5 ct. I thought it was a really sweet gesture, though I haven't ever been dissatisfied with my current stone. I'm not much a jewelry person and it made me wonder what's a standard size stone? I'm not sure if this changes a lot with age and income. I'm 40 and out HHI is $850K if it matters.
