What’s the deal with this? Do they tear up your property and leave you with costly repairs?

Is it better to report it or not report it and get filters?

I don't live in DC but if they will replace the lead main I would do it Report it. The water company had to replace our main (not lead another issue on their end) and the gas company replaced the main as well for free. Ask of course so you don't have some giant bill, but I would also get a whole house water filter and then test the water again to see what it says. One of them dug the entire yard and the other only had a hole in two areas and sort of put a pipe within the other pipe then took the old pipe out.

They replaced the line and then reseeded, etc but we had to water. The gas company or a subcontractor came back a few months later because the (cheap) seeds didn't germinate. We had to do this twice as the water main and gas main were changed at different times, I don't know if this is usual or if they did this because part of our property has a walkway that is owned by our area but we must take care of it.

Honestly that sounds like a PITA but also a solvable problem.

They tested the water as part of the inspection?

Yes settled. They did not disclose any problem with the water. They left the "when was it last inspected" blank.

FML. I overpaid by way too much. Water testing came back with lead.
