It was free for my NMS but they had no interest in Alabama or U of Alabama and thankfully had other options. However, for a conservative leaning child interested in sports, parties, sororities and fraternities, its a fun place. I'm sure focused students can manage to get decent education as well.

College towns tend to be pretty liberal, and with big state schools, there are so many students that a large portion of them don’t have anything to do with Greek life.

Our friend's kid from the NY metro area who is Chinese-American (kid born in US, family has been in the US since the Cultural Revolution) was so miserable there they let her leave after the 1st year which was unusual for that family since they tend in general to have a strong 'you commit, you stick it out' philosophy. She had a pretty bubbly, extroverted personality in high school, and was a strong but not top student-- she found the classes not to be very challenging and the social atmosphere very stifling. She really seemed damaged by the experience, though she's now doing okay at an East Coast school.

Have a dear friend who sends their daughter there. She is thriving with great internships and great financial package. She is in greek life. The liberal thing may be an issue because no one there wants to be political. It seems the liberal kids want to make politics everything and your daughter may not like this FWIW my friend would be described as a moderate and ditto her kid but they admitted they daughter wanted a break from 24/7 politics.
