Hard to be broke in a $9-11M apartment.
I found it -- she got in trouble with a 24 million loan that she couldn't repay and had to settle with the company:

And the personal tragedy I couldn't remember was that she was partnered with Susan Sontag, who had a horrible battle with cancer, and apparently Leibovitz spent very lavishly to care for Sontag in her last years, which is a major part of what precipitated her going deep into debt. It also sounds like the company that loaned her the 24 million is somewhat shady. My sense is that she is not someone who lives very grounded in reality and got in over her head and got taken advantage of. I know it's easy to say "oh she's rich I don't feel sorry for her" but I actually think it was her professional success and wealth that made her vulnerable to people taking advantage and, recognizing she was not very financially savvy, enriched themselves at her expense.
In any case, that is a really nice apartment but I do wonder if taking a 3m bath on it might be a sign of more financial distress. She's in her mid 70s now, I wonder how her health is.
