I agree I'd go with Osman or Oswald nn Ozzy, or look for actual names that had the same vibe (Milo, Enzo, Otis, Omar, Ollie).

One reason I don't love place names for kids is that I think people are much more likely to have strong associations with a place name than with another name. Like I hear Oslo and I immediately think of Norway and snow. I hear Brooklyn and think of the Nets and the bridge. I hear London and think of tea and Big Ben, Paris is the museums and shopping. And so on. I think these are all kind of weird associations to make with a child's name, even when they are positive.

Whereas choosing a person name that doesn't have a place association allows me to just associate the name with that kid. And that's true whether it's a very common name like Henry or a less common name like Zen. Either way, I associate the name with the person it's assigned to. That's just not true of a place name.

Also, I would not bat an eye at Sydney because it’s a real name, not just a place.

London, Paris, etc. seems too try-hard. It would be ok if there was a story behind it, but no connection at all? No.

If you like the beginning sound of the word, then maybe Oscar or Osman and the nn Ozzy. For similar ending sound, Arlo or Cosimo.

I like city names as long as they’re not trendy like Brooklyn. DH has a somewhat pretentious name but it’s the city where his mother was born. We were thinking about naming our DD Sydney because we honeymooned there. But I think it’s weird if you have no connection to the city, especially if it’s not a “real” name.
