I'm remembering our family's elder journey with this ~ Doctor prescribed PT for Mom. When insurance would no longer pay, we asked to private pay. PT said employing his colleague was more appropriate, as exercise specialist. That went well. Then that person suggested including a massage and brought someone in. Mom complained at first, very step of the way but eventually became comfortable with the attention. Enjoyed the visits. They came to her assisted living apt. Sorry no DMV rec.

Btw, also consider a massage. Most elders are missing any human touch.

Have you asked your primary care physician for a referral? Mine recommended a personal trainer and I am older..

To continue, I just Googled and there is a listing for American Society of Exercise Physiologists in Washington DC which notes that they will provide names for one seeking an EP.

You might also seek a certified fitness or exercise coach who would work one-to-one with individuals with varying needs to assess and develop an exercise routine. This routine could include what is needed including walking, balance, strength training, some aerobic, and stretching. The person would do the routine with the person.

In our case we found a person with a masters in exercise physiology who has a private practice with an in-home gym to go to ir she travels to one’s home. She serves mostly seniors in our area in Virginia. he works with our daughter who has a disability so it has taken time to develop a routine. It turns out she teaches a cicle if sessions at the senior center and someone said she had private clients so that is how we found her.

Ideas on finding a person might be to look at the senior center in your area and see what the background is and if they work privately. Check with area universities to see if they have a way to post your need with graduate students in kinesiology, sports fitness or related programs.

I worked with Doug ‘Murphy years ago after I gave birth, and I remember him saying he had a 90 year old client. Google him (he’s in DC). He was fantastic.

I have no names of anyone in the DC area but what we did was have my dad do pt and then, once the insurance stopped paying for it, asked the therapists if any of them do pt at home or know someone who does. My dad is now late 90s and has a daily therapist come by the house.

Thank you so much! This is great advice!! Appreciate it a lot.

Based on a dr's note (PCP or neurologist in his case) My dad did a bunch of Medicare-covered PT for gait/fall risk.. but I didn't micromanage the process for once. Turns out he didn't make enough progress for Medicare to continue coverage after a certain number of visits and he "failed out."

Unless your dad is able to do so, you may want to know (and track) how your dad makes progress so you can make the most of the coverage. They will tell you what exercises are monitored and tested.

They'll also let him come two or more times a week, but my dad went once a week, for the number of covered visits. Up to you all.

Also, the PT clinic where my dad went, they set him to do a lot of exercises without a ton of supervision. Do 3 sets of 10 lunges, bye! Now do clamshells for 2 minutes, see you later. He had terrible form and never could keep count.

I think a dedicated PT would have been better, but not sure that's how the run things.

Thank you! It's really hard to see someone who has been so incredibly active suddenly stop doing much at all. (They just sold their house and moved to a great apartment but it is a massive disruption of routine and not good for a 90yo psyche imo)

Hi all - I live out of the area. I'm trying to help find a trainer for my 90yo dad. He's beyond driving - he used to go to a local Y. They're in the Potomac/Rockville area close to 270. Their building has an amazing gym and it's a very walkable neighborhood - we're really hoping for someone who will get him walking and do some strength training. He is a life long golfer and has been incredibly fit until quite recently. It's not an assisted living facility. Love any recommendations. My siblings and I think 2x a week would be ideal. Thanks in advance for any recommendations.
