This is false.
The Grading and reporting updates Google Doc shared with all secondary teachers explicitly states “Students should have multiple opportunities for reassessment each marking period.”

I think it’s school by school. At Kennedy, retakes are quite generous and readily offered. I don’t know if there’s a limit but the priority is on allowing kids to improve their grade no matter what.
As a parent, I think one retake is fair. But infinite retakes don’t help students learn well or take their studies seriously.

Maybe focus your efforts on getting your kid to study the first time. No wonder there’s a teacher shortage.

The intention is that for things like quizzes, where it is a checkpoint of current knowledge, student's should have the opportunity for reteaching and reassessment. But some types of graded assignments are structured in a way where the student is receiving feedback before submitting the final version. Those wouldn't be something to "retake".
- In science, students might work with a group to complete a laboratory. The teacher may circulate to correct process, check for correct graphing, answer student questions, and then students have to finish their write-up and turn it in. If after all that, the student doesn't like their score, no, they don't get to redo it.
- In English, student may be working on an essay over two week and have two drafts to submit along the way so that they get feedback from the teacher. In addition they may have opportunities for peer editing. If a student doesn't incorporate feedback, or didn't submit intermediate work at all, then when they don't like the final grade, no, they don't get to redo it.
- In social studies, student may be completing a project as part of a group during class and then presenting it. Perhaps the assessment grade is a combination of the student's part of the project and a written reflection after all presentations. If the student is absent part of the time or just didn't put in effort on their part, and they don't like their grade, no, they don't get to redo it.
Content knowledge checks in courses like math, science, language, social studies should have retakes. But a lot of instruction has shifted away from only using quizzes and exit tickets as formative grades. Instead, instruction build in more collaboration and opportunities for feedback along the way, so they are fewer "retakes" than there used to be 10 to 20 years ago.
