LOL, I call them that too, am late 30s/grew up in New England. My college BF was from California so maybe that’s where I picked that term up?

I went to HS in the early 90s (in NY ) and I 100% associate these with weed smokers

My DD is at a school where the theater arts teacher wears one. She's a spacey, new age-y type of person.

I mean, I wouldn't be surprised if someone wearing that was holding weed, but I wouldn't see them and think they were dangerous or in a gang. DH has one and loves it.

I grew up in the Mid-Atlantic, and while they had a stoner-y vibe, they were generally popular. I’d totally give one to my kid to wear if they liked the style. Remember how cool Dylan McKay looked in one?

I grew up in Pittsburgh. In the early 90’s, bajas had a brief period of mainstream popularity. I bought one at the $9.99 clothing store. At that point they weren’t associated solely with pot smokers, though they were definitely sold in the hemp store too!

I grew up in So. California in the 70’s and 80’s and always associated those with the pot smokers.

I think they’ve always been at least loosely associated with Mexico, surfers, wannabe surfers, and weed culture? But I’m 50. No idea what teens think. My 13-year-old was looking at them recently, so perhaps they’re somewhat kid-cool again?

A friend who is an artist/clothing designer sometimes wears an old shrunken one (may actually be a kid size as she’s petite and it only reaches her high hip) and makes it look fashionable with jeans, work boots, lots of jewelry and her hair all wild and curly. But she somehow makes most things look amazing whereas i would look as silly as I did in the 80s wearing my older sister’s oversized “drug rug” (what our dad called it).

I grew up out West in the '80s and we would often wear those hoodies from Mexico with jeans. They were popular and not associated with drug use or any particular sub-culture, except maybe being laid-back, not preppy, etc. I saved my favorite and thought about offering it to my teens, but didn't know -- are these now associated with weed users? I see them sometimes for sale in smoke shops.
