Nope. If the function isn't near the office, I'm not commuting to the office, driving people to the function, driving back to the office and then commuting home. I'm just driving to the function and then driving home

Yes, it's pretty common. I hate being tied to someone else's preferences on when to leave, so I only do it if it's like a lunch or something where we are all coming back to work. If it's a training or all day event where the leaving is more flexible and we are going home after, I'm driving alone even if I'm passing the office on the way home so could drop someone off.

I've done it but always am the one driving so I can expense the mileage.

These events are infrequent in my office but I usually offer to give rides to people w/o cars. It's usually 30-60 minutes out of my life. If I felt that strongly about avoiding them, I'd skip the event.

I'm with you. I always drive myself, by myself. I need my me time.

We just did this for our company picnic. I think there were about ten cars on the spreadsheet? Seemed like people appreciated it, the event was in the afternoon and our office is right by metro so not everyone has a car at work. It was only a ten minute drive so pretty low stakes.

We had a work function in DC last week and one of my team members was considering not going because she didn't want to drive (she lives way far out). I mentioned that another co-worker who also lives way far out may be willing to drive her and they were both excited about the prospect. Then in the end I had them pick me up too lol (I live about halfway into DC, right on their way). I ubered home though.

Pretty common, depending on where and how many people. Lots of my coworkers commute by public transit and can't easily get to an offsite location, and I'm going anyway so having them call a Lyft is silly. But as PP said, you can decline.

Eh, it can be. Look at the price of gas - seems like a good idea. But if you don't want to be in an enclosed car with Office Farter Frank or the guy who always puts his hand on the back of your chair and leans a little too close to you when looking at your screen, just announce you're driving yourself. They can't insist on carpooling.
