You write this as if the Hispanic population in MCPS is 80%. It’s not. We have pretty sizable chunks of black, white and asian populations in our schools, so it is not unusual for some of our schools to have more of those groups represented than the Hispanic students.

Saying that a school that is mostly white and Asian “looks nothing like the county” is false and harmful because Montgomery County has had and still has plenty of residents who are white or Asian and they belong here as much as anyone else. Shame on you.

I have a freshman and so far it has been a rough start academically. He has Bs and Cs coming from straight As in middle. I think he is still adjusting so I am giving him some room to grow. He dropped one honors course and is in one AP. All that said he is doing really well with making friends. They had some sort of a glo dance last Friday in lieu of a homecoming dance. He said he had a lot of fun. Got home at midnight. Overall he has had a great experience socially. I like some teacher more than others.

My kids have liked Wootton. I have 2 grads and a 10th grader. One of mine moved from private and found the kids were generally friendly. Sports can be a nice way to make the school smaller but I’d also highly recommend newspaper (start by registering for journalism) or theater. My kids have had some truly amazing teachers who really go the extra mile though there were 2 duds over all the years. I thought the school would be a pressure cooker but my oldest 2 did fine. However it’s been harder on my 10th grader who isn’t on an AP track due to learning issues. The principal is extremely friendly. My son likes him a lot. The only downside is that the school building is in horrible condition. It’s been long overdue for renovation.

They have always had homecoming dances in the past. The principal never communicated why they didn’t this year but my son heard a rumor it was financial. They replaced it with an event in the gym immediately after the football game which my son wasn’t interested in.

My biggest issue is just not as much school spirit as other high schools. And no homecoming dance!! Like one of the only schools to not offer one. And the school is so old and run down.

But the class offerings, teachers, and less toxicity of other high schools makes it an ideal high school. WJ and RM have a ton more issues than Wootton. We are happy.

I have never heard of a high school not having a homecoming. I'm so confused. Why would that be the case at Wooton?

Everyone hates Wootton.

What are positives/negatives? Would it be easy for a kid new to the area to make friends in 9th? Is it as cut throat and competitive as I’ve heard?
