My teenager has friends that don’t wear seatbelts and parents don’t make them. He was showing me some BeReal pics and happen to scroll by one where it was very obvious a whole group of them were not. From the picture background, I recognized it as limited access road and not one near their school. I didn’t say anything to him at the time, but made a mental note to remind him of the importance of seatbelts.
These are the same parents who don’t make their kids where helmets at the bike park so they’re comfort level is different than mine.

I first encountered this with DC's friend in elementary school. Friend's grandparents drive her around and did not make her wear seatbelts. My jaw dropped, but I think it was a generational thing.

I know the kind of parents you’re talking about- it’s like they’re my friends’ parents in the 80s.
My DD is at a private school and I live a half mile from school dropoff and see her friends in parents’ cars leaning into the front seat in a way no seatbelt can accommodate or sitting in the front seat. They’re 8!
I’ve also seen older, middle school kids pop out of sunroofs to say hi to friends or leaning out windows with no seatbelts. So my guess is it starts with the “but we’re not going far/just to dropoff/just for a minute” crowd.

The only teens I see not wearing seatbelts are those in jacked up pickup trucks. But the adults aren't in those vehicles either, so like father like son. Could be that it is easier for me to see they don't than those in normal sized vehicles.
My nephew, who would want to own a jacked up pickup truck often doesn't. Same with his mother.

Nope, car doesn't move until seat belts are on. Agree with PP--if I found out a parent didn't require them my kid wouldn't be riding with them.
My DH and I are actually relatively lax parents, but seatbelts are the hill we die on. We have all seen the way people drive around here.

Seatbelt buckling is so automatic for my generation and below, 1980s/1990s that I’m surprise to learn there are kids that are not buckling. All of the kids and my fear do. But if I were to encounter one that didn’t, then I would make a note and never let my kid ride with them.
