I grew up in Fairfax and attended their programs, and my own children attend MCPS. Personally, I feel the quality of education my children have gotten from the MCPS programs like the CES, and magnets is far better than what FCPS offers mostly because it is less watered down.

MCPS also has enriched literacy and various math acceleration programs at local/boundary school on a per-school basis, starting in 4th grade.

And if you want to debate the politics of it, please comment one of the many existing threads, not here.

Thry moved from montgomery county to fairfax county 2 years ago. I love to live in monygomery county, but I feel like MCPS lacks things and limited resources compared to FCPS. I hate lottery system at 3rd grade, and it seems like it is not as great as AAP offered in FCPS system for ES, MS and HS. I currently have a smart 2nd grader in MCPS. I am feeling sad and jealous. Just a vent post


MCPS doesn't have a faux gifted program to get around segregation laws like VA.


Moco just uses real estate prices to achieve segregation

Just like every other wealthy suburb. Fairfax included.

This is a you problem not a MCPS problem. Does your kid even need anything more?

I think there are advantages and disadvantages. Fairfax AAP serves everyone who qualifies, which seems like a net positive. But in reality, you hear a lot of complaints about it being “watered down,” since it takes so many students. Also, since the top students (defined pretty broadly) are pulled out of the classroom, that raises the stakes for the kids who just miss the cutoff, so there’s a lot of stress about getting in. MCPS always has qualified kids who aren’t pulled out for special programming, so a bright kid in a regular classroom is more likely to have a peer group.

TLDR; read the AAP board. It’s not all roses on the other side.
