My kid was waitlisted for the engineering magnet so is doing the engineering academy. He is very interested in STEM. It seems to be a very good fit for him, STEM wise.

I’m not impressed with the writing skills instruction, though I’m not sure other public schools do any better job. He started junior year having never written a paper for a class. Hopefully he will get some of that in AP.

I'm the poster from above with a kid in "gen pop." There are a lot of smart and talented kids not in one of the magnets. If my kid was completely not interested in STEM they might have picked Einstein or Blair in the DCC BUT having said that the overall atmosphere at the school is really good, and there are AP classes in every subject area regardless of your interest. Are there as many kids as super into music and art as Einstein or Blair? Probably not, no. There are still opportunities.

If your kid is not into STEM and instead is into art or music primarily they could pick Einstein (also a good school) or Blair as their top DCC choice. I let my kids decide what magnets to apply to (or not) and I let them choose what high school they wanted to go to.

I only recently realized that our home school, Einstein, seems to offer very minimal STEM classes.. Now looking closely at Wheaton, though my kid is fixated on the magnet. I'd also be interested in feedback on gen pop at Wheaton, in case he doesn't get in the magnet.

Wheaton is a really great school for STEM-y, engineering, Architecture that kind of brain kids. Teachers are awesome and the building is wonderful. If it weren't so far from me, I'd definitely consider it for my kid - def above Kennedy and Einstein

How expensive is the program?

We attended open house yesterday and was impressed. Can anyone share recent experiences with Wheaton? We are specifically interested in the Architecture track. Before the open house we were considering doing the lottery to attend Thomas Edison part time in 11th and 12th grade but now we are considering Wheaton for all four years, which would guarantee being in the Architecture program.
