Two days past emissions inspection due date, I got pulled over and fined. I was two days late because we were on a summer road trip to another state when the notice came. They caught me driving back into MD with the suitcases in the trunk.

Driving with an expired sticker…… sticker…. Is not a huge deal because the car registration itself is up to date.

Yes, the car is registered, you're just waiting for the proof. Totally different situation than the care not being registered. Disagree with the posters above that driving an unregistered car is not a big deal. If you get caught they won't let you drive the car and they will have it towed which is expensive.

In Virginia you won’t be pulled over unless they are over a year expired. And even if you do get pulled over, the officer will look the car up in the system and see that it’s registered and they’ll just give a reminder to get the sticker on.

Yes because they will show up as not expired in the mva. So if an Officer is behind him and runs the tag that will see it’s not expired.
Technically he could get a ticket for “ not displaying a valid registration sticker” but it’s very unlikely..

I drove with expired tags for two months recently, and I didn’t even have the printout. On the slim chance you get pulled over, you show the printout.
Granted, I am a middle-aged white lady with baby car seats in the back. I’m not worried about a cop using expired tags as a pretext to harrass me.

Depends what the alternative is, OP. If you have another car, he could use that. If it's a choice between missing practice and driving with expired plates, eh. Maybe drive. Or carpool, or Uber. But my son, when he was 17, was not a good enough driver to drive himself anywhere, so the point would have been moot anyway!
